Rat Problem?

Saw this in my daytimer today…

Hating people is like burning down your own house to get rid of a rat.

-Harry Emerson Fosdick

  1. But isn’t the burning question really…does that mean when rats burn down my house it should make me hate people?

  2. Are you taking the victim mentality here…blaming the burning down of your house (which you did, right?) on the rats? 🙂 Or, are you saying that rats actually did burn down your house? Shouldn’t you hate the rats?

  3. I’m saying that if the rats actually did burn down my house. I would agree it would seem that I should hate the rats but didn’t the rats really do it because the’ve been oppressed by the humans for so long?

  4. OK, I’m stopping this conversation. I’m talking with someone who sympathizes with rats. Have a good evening. 😛

  5. wanna know what i think? if i could singlehandedly murder every rat on the planet i would…
how’s that for a conversation stopper?

  6. true, true.

  7. Well, metaphorically speaking in the CONTEXT OF THE STINKIN’ QUOTE IN THE FIRST PLACE, (where this whole mess started), if we eliminated every rat on the planet, there would be no more hate. Right? Or would there be no more reason to hate people? Y’all have successfully confused me on this one.

(and, LP, I guess it WASN’T a conversation stopper)

  8. well, if I was a sagacious counsellor (like that word jhaas?) I would say we are all just trying to avoid the subject of hating people!

  9. OK, now I KNOW this blogging is a good thing. I LEARNED A NEW WORD TODAY.

Sagacious: of keen and farsighted penetration and judgment : DISCERNING b : caused by or indicating acute discernment.

  10. I know who you are!! Finally!!! I am so pleased with myself. Ok, I am a dork and proud of it. Welcome to this crazy world of blogging. May you have a pleasant experience. 🙂

  11. Hi, CF. Thanks. It’s a nice way to get my thoughts down, and a whole lot cooler than paper.
