Crucifixion

passion_01.jpg

“Shout and cheer, Daughter Zion!  Raise the roof, Daugher Jerusalem!  Your king is coming!  a good king who makes all things right, a humble king rdiding a donkey, a mere colt of a donkey.  I’ve had it with war – no more chariots for Ephraim, no more war horses for Jerusalem, no more swords and spears, bows and arrows.  He will offer peace to the nations, a peaceful rule worldwide, from the four winds to the seven seas.” – Zechariah 9:9-10

…the pastor at my church this morning made this reference and talked about how the disciples were severely disillusioned by the death of Jesus.  They didn’t realize (see Mark 8:30-32) that this scripture in Zechariah was referring to internal peace…the only peace God provides.  And His sacrifice would set the captives free; not from Rome, but from sin and helplessness and hopelessness, and give us peace where we need it the most, in our hearts.

And here we are, America, 2000 years later, and as I sat in three identical services this morning viewing some GREAT drama/monologues about Palm Sunday/Good Friday/”Silent Saturday”, this thought hit me repeatedly:

We’re still missing it.

We’re listening to evangelists on TV continually spout off about “prosperity” and “wealth” and “blessings from God”, when in fact, if you throw spare change on the table at the end of the day when you walk in the door, you’re in the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.  America, we are fat.  I was even involved in a conversation today where a friend of mine saw a mother purchase a $500 snare drum for her kid who is just starting drum lessons.  We don’t realize how good we’ve got it.  We don’t.

I continually run into those in my sphere of influence who reject God and His awesome, amazing love for us because it doesn’t always translate into material wealth and comfort.  Well, here’s a shocker for ya:  Why in the world would God give us more of something that already has taken His place in our lives?!??!

God gave His only Son so that we would have internal peace regardless of our external circumstances.  He is enough.  That’s the honest truth.  Knowing God is enough.  He does the rest.  Provides, cares for, heals, helps us grow into who He originally planned us to be when He created us at the beginning of the world.  I can’t control external stuff , anyway.  But the internal peace and love He provides is the most precious treasure ever created.  And it’s free.  And He gave His life in the most brutal way imaginable to obtain it.  For us.

Jesus was crucified partially because He didn’t live up to the hype.  He didn’t turn out to be the conquering hero that the Jewish people thought He was going to be.  He didn’t give them material or physical comfort, release from the Romans like they interpreted the scripture to be.  And here we are 2000 years, later, and we’re doing the same……dang……thing.  Crucifying Him.

Please stop…
